Kahoot Vocabulary Battle
vocabularyaccuracyreviewsmall-groupmedium prep10-15 min
Students play a fast-paced multiple-choice quiz on their devices. Each question appears for 10–30 seconds; fastest correct answer scores highest. Kahoot is the most-adopted classroom quiz platform; when used as review (not first exposure), it drives strong retention.
Procedure
- Teacher builds a Kahoot quiz of 10–15 items, each with 4 answer options.
- Class joins via kahoot.it with a game PIN.
- Each student (or team) answers on their device.
- Between questions, the leaderboard updates visibly. Creates mild competitive excitement.
- After all questions, top 3 are celebrated. Teacher pulls up the answer breakdown for any question where >30% got it wrong.
- Review the wrongs: this is the learning moment. Discuss why the distractor trapped people.
Good Question Types
| Category | Example |
|---|---|
| Definition → Word | "Able to recover quickly" = ? (resilient / elastic / flexible / stretchy) |
| Word → Synonym | Synonym for "obtain"? (get / lose / ignore / build) |
| Gap-fill | He refused to … with the new policy. (comply / compile / compel / complement) |
| Collocation | Which verb goes with "a decision"? (make / do / create / build) |
| Pronunciation | Which word has the stress on the second syllable? (photograph / photography / photo / photogenic) |
| Confusables | Choose the correct form: "The … was large." (effect / affect) |
Why It Works
- Time pressure reveals: students who "know" a word slowly don't know it fluently. Kahoot's timer tests automaticity.
- Visible leaderboard: the scoreboard itself is a motivator — many students push harder for position.
- Answer analysis: the post-game breakdown shows exactly which items need re-teaching.
- Low stakes + high energy: the music and visuals remove assessment anxiety.
Variations
- Team mode: 3 per team; teams discuss before tapping. Less solo-dominant.
- Student-made Kahoots: pairs build a 5-question quiz each; play all the quizzes back-to-back.
- Connect to rest of lesson: after the quiz, any question with >30% wrong becomes a mini-review.
- Blind Kahoot (Kahoot's Teach-new mode): introduce new content question-by-question, with right-answers taught in between.
Tips
- Use Kahoot for review, not for initial learning. Testing something students have never seen generates noise, not learning.
- Keep quizzes short (10–15 questions). Engagement drops after that.
- The distractors are where you teach. Don't use random wrong answers — use the misconceptions you want to surface.
- After-game: export the results. The individual data on which items each student missed is gold for differentiated follow-up.
