RallyCoach

Partners alternate: A solves one problem while B coaches. B solves the next while A coaches. The coach praises, hints, and corrects — but does not simply give the answer.
The iterative, item-by-item version of Sage-N-Scribe. Ideal for practice sets of discrete items (grammar exercises, vocabulary matching, multiple-choice reading).
Procedure
- Pairs. One practice sheet, one pen.
- Partner A solves item 1 aloud, writes the answer. Partner B coaches:
- Great — next one. (if correct)
- Check that verb tense again. (if wrong)
- Why did you choose that one? (for strategy questions)
- Praise with a specific name: Nice catch on the article there.
- Swap roles for item 2. A coaches; B solves.
- Continue alternating through the set.
Coaching Rules
- Hint, don't tell. There's something off in the second half.
- Celebrate correct answers specifically, not with "yeah good."
- Ask why on correct answers you suspect were guesses.
- Never grab the pen — coaching is verbal only.
Why It Works
- Doubled engagement: every item has a solver AND a listener working on it.
- Metacognitive coaching: explaining why develops understanding further than just answering.
- Balanced workload: alternating ensures both partners get equal solving and coaching time.
Variations
- Silent RallyCoach: coach can only point or tap on the sheet. Hardest version.
- Triple RallyCoach: add a third partner as observer who tracks coaching quality. Great for teacher training.
- Coach note: coach writes one-sentence feedback at the end of the sheet instead of verbal.
Tips
- Model the coaching voice before the activity. Without modelling, coaches default to "yeah that's right" or "wrong."
- Use RallyCoach as the freer half of a practice set. First half independent, second half RallyCoach — students notice their own errors between stages.
- Post the coaching rules on the wall. Students self-correct when they drift back into answer-giving.
