Traveling Pairs

Pairs first work together on a task. Then one partner stays put; the other travels to a new pair. The visiting student brings their pair's answer; the hosting pair shares theirs. Knowledge spreads across the room through controlled migration.
Procedure
- Pairs work on a task together. Each pair produces a shared answer (solution, definition, opinion summary, paraphrase). 5–8 min.
- Designate roles: one partner = Stayer, one = Traveller.
- Travellers move clockwise to the next pair. They now face a new Stayer.
- Share phase (2 min): Traveller explains their original pair's answer; Stayer explains theirs. Compare.
- Travellers move again to the next pair. Repeat 3–4 times.
- Everyone returns home. Pairs compare what they've gathered across the room.
Why It Works
- Controlled spread: after 4 rounds, each pair has encountered 4–8 different answers.
- Double-role rehearsal: every student explains their pair's answer many times (Stayers) or hears many (Travellers).
- Social mobility: pairs who never speak to each other otherwise now exchange.
Good Task Types
- Reading interpretations: pairs come up with one interpretation of a passage; travel to hear others.
- Problem solutions: pairs propose a solution to a scenario; travel to compare.
- Vocabulary definitions: pairs write their own definition of a target word; travel to vote on the best.
- Translation choices: pairs pick the best translation of a tricky phrase.
Variations
- Roles swap: after the second travel, the Stayer becomes the Traveller. Fresh circulation patterns.
- Stamp card: Travellers carry a card; each host stamps it with a unique mark. Structures the rotation and prevents revisiting.
- Silent travel: Travellers read Stayers' written answer; no talking allowed. Good for writing-focused tasks.
Tips
- Work out the travel direction clearly or chaos ensues. Clockwise is simplest.
- Don't over-travel: after 4 rotations, diminishing returns. Call it and debrief.
- Pair with Pairs Compare as a final step — returning Travellers report, pairs merge new ideas.
