Backchaining Build-Up

A long sentence is drilled from its end, adding one chunk at a time going backward until the full sentence is produced. Keeps the natural stress, rhythm, and intonation intact — forward-drilling usually destroys them.

Procedure
- Target sentence: I was going to call you when I got home.
- Drill the end first. Class repeats after teacher:
- when I got home ×2
- call you when I got home ×2
- to call you when I got home ×2
- going to call you when I got home ×2
- was going to call you when I got home ×2
- I was going to call you when I got home ×2
- Open pairs: individual students produce the full sentence.
- Pairs drill two more target sentences from the same pattern.
Why It Works
- Natural stress preserved: forward drilling (word-by-word start-to-end) makes students unstress what should be stressed. Back-chaining keeps the natural prosody.
- Small memory load per step: each addition is only one chunk longer than the previous.
- Rhythmic consistency: the sentence sounds the same at every length, just with more in front.
Best Targets
- Contracted forms: I'd've called you if I'd known. (I would have called you if I had known)
- Weak forms: He's got to've been there by now.
- Functional chunks: What time would you like to meet tomorrow?
- Passive structures: The package will have been delivered by Friday.
Variations
- Silent backchain: teacher mouths the chunk; students produce aloud.
- Back then forward: after building back, reverse the process — peel off chunks from the start.
- Backchain + visualise: draw a flowchart of the sentence growing backward. Visible scaffolding.
Tips
- Split at natural stress boundaries, not grammatical ones. Would have gone is one chunk (would've gone), not three.
- Pair with Sentence Stress Clapping to show the rhythm survives across all lengths.
- Especially useful for sentences containing weak forms students keep mispronouncing in full-form.
