Chunking Practice
readingfluencyaccuracypracticeindividuallow prep10-15 min
Students mark a text into meaningful "chunks" — noun phrases, verb phrases, prepositional phrases — then re-read it, eyes moving chunk by chunk rather than word by word. Breaks word-by-word reading; a major fluency gain for exam readers.
Procedure
- Distribute a short passage (150–250 words).
- Read aloud, pausing at chunk boundaries: the old man / in the corner / was reading / a letter / from his daughter.
- Students mark chunk boundaries on their own text with slashes.
- Silent re-read: eyes move only between chunks, not word-by-word. Time the read.
- Third read: faster. Target 30–40% faster than un-chunked reading.
- Comprehension check: 3 quick questions. Did the faster read hurt comprehension?
Why It Works
- Reading is recognition of meaning groups, not letter strings. Slow readers subvocalise every word; fast readers sweep phrases.
- Exam leverage: IELTS and TOEFL both penalise slow readers; chunking is the single largest speed gain available.
- Transfers with practice: after several sessions, students begin chunking on first-pass reading automatically.
Chunk Boundaries to Teach
| Boundary | Example |
|---|---|
| Noun phrase | the old man / in the corner |
| Verb phrase | was reading / a letter |
| Prepositional phrase | in the corner / from his daughter |
| Subordinate clause | although it was raining, / we went out |
| Listing unit | apples, oranges, / and bananas |
Variations
- Chunk-and-retell: after the read, students retell using only the chunk phrases, not full sentences. Tests whether chunks carry meaning.
- Colour-chunking: highlight noun phrases in one colour, verbs in another. Visible grammar.
- Pair chunking: partners mark the same text, then compare where they differ. Differences reveal parsing choices.
- Timed rerun: three reads of the same text; chart the times. Seeing speed gain motivates.
Tips
- Use texts at comfortable level. Chunking at frustration-level is impossible.
- The goal is not memorising chunks but training eye movement. After 5 sessions, drop the marking step.
- Pair with Shadow Reading for the spoken-chunk equivalent.
